Choosing Paint Colors
Choosing the right paint colors for your home can often be a daunting task. There are many things to consider, and often a color consultation with a professional designer can assist in the decision making process.
The following are a few tips to remember when choosing paint colors.
1.)Choosing exterior and interior paint colors involve different decision making processes and techniques. Don't try to apply indoor treatments outdoors or visa versa.
2.)For exterior color, consider your home's overall streetscape, architectural details, and history. Don't copy your neighbors, and try to choose something that is "you". Remember you have to live with the decision for awhile. Picking something too bold, or out of character may result in second thoughts after the fact..
3.)Light colours, and especially light trim colors, will add size to your home. Darker trim colours tend to make things look smaller, but can assist in drawing attention to the architectural details of a larger home.
4.) Try not to use tone on tone color. Its fine to stay within the same range of colours on the same swatch, but tonal values between the trim and wall color should be far enough apart that a definite contrast is created. Contrast is important in highlighting the architecture of your home's exterior.
5.) Consider what can't be painted. If you have metal railings, stonework, brick, vinyl windows, or any other permanent fixtures, make sure these elements are included into the overall color scheme.
6.) Test before you try. Most paint companies will provide test patches to allow you to see the true color in natural lighting conditions before you commit to a certain color.
